The Final Days: Friday & Saturday

Friday was a very busy day. We met at 7:30 and caught the 8:00 boat from PIB to Catawba. We visited several beaches and talked about shoreline erosion, movement of sand bars, and breakwalls.













We visited Old Woman Creek, which is an estuary where the creek flows into Lake Erie. The visitors center had a great museum and interesting magazines and brochures. All of us took quite a few!

We even stopped at Toft's ice cream right before we headed back to Gibralter!
That evening we had another session of class until about nine, and then we all had to study for the test on Saturday.
I stayed up pretty late to study.

The last day we had our final quiz at 8:30, and most of us felt we did pretty well. I had a really fun week, and I had a great time with all field trips. I can't wait to do this again next year!

Thursday

Today we had lecture in the morning and then in the afternoon. We got our quizzes back (good grades!) and then we had another lab to do. Later we drove "little red" an underwater device that allows you to explore the lake with an underwater camera and a joystick. It was amazing how clear the images were on live camera!
This evening we also had two guest speakers as well. It was a busy day once again.

Wednesday at Stone Lab

Today was a really fun day. We had our first quiz in the morning (which I studied a lot for, so hopefully I did well), then we went on a field trip to Kelley's Island. We went to the quarry and looked for fossils, which was really cool. Everyone found tons of old fossils.
Later we visited the glacier grooves on Kelley's.



We also had time to visit Put-in-Bay. All of us took the rowboats over to South Bass and visited the Monument, had dinner, and went to some shops.

Monday--Day 2

Tonight I am pretty exhausted from the busy day! We had lecture in the morning, and then went out on the Gibralter III for water sampling. We anchored off of Rattlesnake Island and even trolled for fish... In the end, we found mayfly larvae and blood worms at the bottom of the lake, and caught some small white bass, emerald shiners, perch, and a gobie.
When we got back, we had a lab and we meet up again at 7:00. The island is so much fun and I've made lots of new friends.

First Day at Stone Lab

Today was my first day at Stone Lab taking a week-long course of Oceanography. My family's summer cottage is on Middle Bass, so I took the Sonny S boat to the boardwalk, and my dad and I walked to the check in on Bayview Avenue.

Later, I met my three other room mates, who are all in the same class as me. There's around 13 students in our class and everyone is excited for this week. We went to orientation and then dinner (spaghetti) and afterwards we took a short rowboat ride off of Gibralter. It was fun, and we plan to make it to the bay at some point this week!

At 6:30 we had our first session of class and the subject is very interesting to me. I think I will definitely learn a lot about an area I'm interested in!
This evening we walked around the island and found the cliffs and also trails that lead to the shore; its a beautiful island! Everyone's pretty tired from the first day, so we're going to bed early!
